BRAIN BEE 2008!

On behalf of the board of the Arlington Educational Enrichment Fund, we'd like to thank the many businesses, organizations and individuals who contributed in making this year's Brain Bee a huge success.

In particular, we owe tremendous appreciation to our four corporate sponsors: Belmont Orthodontics, Brookline Bank, Cross Country Automotive Services and ZipWall. Other organizations which sponsored individual teams included: Ammondson Architects, Arlington Dog Owners Group, Beaver Brook Pediatrics, Fienmann Inc., Fitness Together, The Friends of Robbins Library, Temple Shir Tikvah, Thoughtforms and each of our public schools.

In-kind donations were provided by Stop & Shop, Trader Joe's, Johnnies' Foodmaster, Wilson's Farms, Henry Bear's Park, Belmont Toys, the Capitol Theater, Brigham's, Copies, Inc., Menotomy Beer & Wine, the Computer Café and Gamewright.

Countless other individuals helped to make the day fun and memorable. We thank all those who wrote questions, provided live music, filmed it live for Arlington Studio, dressed up in costume and served as judges and participants. And, we thank the many spectators, children and adults, who came down to Town Hall to cheer on their teams.

For the second year in a row, the Thompson School walked away with the grand prize. The three team members will enjoy a private lunch prepared especially by them by Bob Sargent at Flora(s. They will be joined by Nobel Prize winner and Arlington resident, Professor Roy Glauber.

The proceeds from this event will go directly back into the Arlington public schools to fund creative and innovative programs proposed by Arlington parents, teachers and school administrators. A recent example of a grant funded by the AEEF, "Bridging the Gap: Poetry Out Loud," brings Arlington senior citizens together with Ottoson sixth graders in workshops and performances as they learn about, create, and perform poetry. These are other examples of grants we have funded.

Section of Tile Mosaic, Children's Room, Robbins Library

When you go to the Robbins Library, check out the amazing tile mosaic inspired by childrens literature in the Childrens Room.  The mosaic was designed and installed by Arlington High School students under the direction of art teacher, Nancy Muise, and funded by the Arlington Educational Enrichment Fund (AEEF). You will be amazed by this beautiful piece of public art.

The AEEF depends entirely on donations from individuals and businesses to fund innovative and exciting projects like the math grants at Stratton and the mural at the Robbins Library.  If youd like to support the work of the AEEF and recognize Arlington teachers and staff at the same time, please consider our Stars program.  When you make a donation to the AEEF, teachers and staff will receive a lovely certificate that a gift has been made in their name.  Flyers about the Stars program were recently distributed in backpacks or you can send your check, along with relevant information (teachers to be honored, which school, from whom, etc.) to AEEF, 350 Mass. Ave, Box 194, Arlington, MA 02474.
