Tech-E:
On-line Media Literacy Course Elective
This project
offers an on-line credited elective to Arlington High School students.
Grant money will pay the on-line course-ware fee and course supplies.
This grant also provides for the course facilitator to attend the 2-day
MassCue conference, allowing her to increase her awareness of other
educational technology initiatives high schools.
Literacy Enrichment:
Books on Audio-CD
The Literacy
Enrichment project will provide literacy support for English Language
Learners at the High School, by employing Books on CD to scaffold
independent reading at home. Literature will be selected in the form of
both text and audio-CD and packaged in “bookbags” for students to take
home on a rotating basis. This grant will pay for the purchase of the CD
players, as well as the Books on CD.
DNA Genotyping
using the Alu Insertion Polymorphism
Biology
students at Arlington High School will be able to experience
biotechnology research as it is currently practiced in the laboratory
thanks to this AEEF grant. This kit allows students to perform complex
DNA research themselves, as opposed to reading about it in a textbook.
Asian Puppet
Making Residency
Traditional
puppet theaters are part of virtually every country in the world. In
addition to being a unique art form, puppets can reveal a great amount
about other cultures. This project will give students the chance to
study puppet-making in depth, and expose them to the culture of
puppet-making in Asian cultures. This artist-in-residence program,
staffed by the Arlington Center for the Arts, will serve all Peirce
Elementary School students.
Clay and the
Learning Process
With this
grant, all fourth and fifth graders at the Hardy Elementary School will
have the opportunity to work with a professional ceramic artist and
create a hand-built, kiln-fired work of art. The artist, teachers, and
students will together explore ways in which the media of clay can be
used to express a science or social studies topic.
Music for
Lunch / The Stratton Cafe
Stratton Elementary
School students will be able to enjoy lunchtime concerts courtesy of
this AEEF grant. From January through June, 2005, monthly concerts will
be presented consisting of varied musical styles, including Scottish
fiddle, klezmer, Japanese drumming, and jazz. Through this program,
Stratton students will be raising their level of music appreciation and
expanding their musical horizons.
Thompson
Greenhouse Project
This AEEF
grant provides the funds for the Thompson Elementary School to purchase
a portable Professional Horticultural Greenhouse. This 14' x 9' x 7'
structure will be erected in the school courtyard, in close proximity to
all classrooms. This greenhouse will enrich the science curriculum
through year-round hands-on experience with soil and the life cycle of
plants. Nearly every grade K-5 will be utilizing the greenhouse.
